Illiterary Fiction (New Literary Fiction Novel)
Imagine a world where people snub literature and knowledge. Those who read are “readers”, a derogatory term barely superior to being a burger-flipper. It’s a world just like our own. When you think of it, it is our own. Welcome to Illiterary Fiction, my latest literary-fiction novel.
As with most of interesting ideas, this too began with a what-if question. Seeing the impossible mediocrity that surrounds us, the disappearance of basic reading and writing skills, I had a what-if moment.
What if people stopped reading altogether? What if there existed professional readers, whose job would be to read and summarize for those who wouldn’t read anything longer than a tweet?
Illiterary Fiction: the Basics
Illiterary Fiction follows Paul, a man in his early thirties who has just lost his job at a media house. A rich Wall Street analyst, Stanley, hires Paul to be his professional reader. It feels like a dream coming true. Paul is promised success, wealth, and the overpowering hope of getting his estranged wife back. But as he enters this life where deception and misery lurk beneath the gilded surface, and where things are never what they seem, he realizes that Stanley’s gifts require moral compromises.
Although Illiterary Fiction is a story about reading and knowledge, it goes far beyond the surface. Ultimately, it’s a story about balancing between your personal ethics and the world around you.
Every day, we need to face people whom we despise. We need to deal with situations we loathe. How, then, do we stay true to our integrity and who we are? These are some of the questions Illiterary Fiction attempts to answer poses. The answers are up for grabs.
