Why Do People Make Reaction Videos?

October 14, 2018

Go to YouTube and type “Reaction Video” in the search box. Alternatively, make it specific and type “reaction video” plus the name of your favorite band. Or your favorite basketball player. Or the trailer of a movie you like. You’ll find tons (depending on the popularity of the topic) of what is known as a reaction video. That is, a video of a person’s reaction watching another video. Crowdfunding vs Paying Taxes

September 12, 2018

Some months ago I wrote an article about the value of public healthcare. I mentioned how “it’s the taxes, stupid” that pay for it. That is, for things you – yes, you! – could need one day. Long-term readers of this blog will recognize that one of its themes is mediocrity. Perhaps the world has always been like that, but the digital revolution has exacerbated the problem. People become more self-centered (more idiotai in other words), and focus not on the long-term collective good but on temporary, meaningless personal gain. Some might think that, in such a context, being “elite” is the counterbalance. But just as “ham” and “hammock” are two vastly different things, so is being elite and being elitist. Elitism is mediocrity. It’s simply a different aspect of the same thing.
