Trust Is a Choice

June 19, 2018

“I trust you,” you might tell your friend who insists she can fix your mobile. “Our marriage is based on trust,” you might also hear someone saying. Or, perhaps in moments of semi-conscious introspection, one might say “I guess I’ll have to trust that you know what you’re doing.” This latter phrase reveals that trust is a choice. You choose to trust people, and you choose not to trust them.

There are several aspects that trust involves, and the dynamics are quite complex. Perhaps this is partly due to “trust” being a word that (like love) is misunderstood and misused a lot.

Fear, Nonconformity, and Action

February 12, 2018

A – formerly metal 😉 – Swedish band sings “fear is the weakness in all of us”. But they’ve got it wrong. It’s not fear that is the weakness; it’s what it pushes us to do (or not). We mostly do something we wouldn’t (or leave undone something we’d like to) because of our fear of nonconformity. Usually we are deathly afraid of doing something unexpected. We are paralyzed in the thought of doing something our parents and teachers, our peers and society, wouldn’t anticipate. Fear, nonconformity, and action are all interconnected.

Fear is not the problem. But conditioning is.

The Boiling Frog Problem

January 2, 2018

It is said that if you drop a frog into a pot with boiling water, it will naturally jump out, trying to escape. Conversely, if you place it in one with lukewarm water which you are heating gradually, the frog will remain there until it boils to death, oblivious of the situation. I don’t know if this is actually the case, but the boiling frog problem is a stunningly accurate metaphor for the state of affairs in the world today.
