The Devolution of Video Games: Perspectives on Patience

Today’s topic focuses on the devolution of video games. Now, If I start talking about the video games of my childhood, you might think I’m planning to talk about nostalgia.

Undeniably, if I start talking about such computers as the Spectrum 128k, the Commodore 64, and the Amstrad CPC 6128, some older people will feel a sweet tingling in their hearts. Anyone over 35 years old has certainly heard of MatchDay II, Renegade, R-Type, or Ghosts ‘n Goblins.

In actual fact, however, today’s post will have more to do with something else. If you remember this article, I drew parallels between the expressions of mediocrity that frustrate modern life and the lack of patience displayed by modern people.

The video game evolution is a proper term only when the topic is approached from a technical perspective. Conversely, if you focus on society and culture, we should be talking about video game devolution.

If you recognize this, congratulations; you’ve had a happy videogame childhood. In a framework related to the devolution of video games, it seems the more complex *and easily accessible* games become, the more devolved they are.

Big City Living (why I Love the Smell of Garbage)

What’s better, to live in a big city or a small village? Hey, there’s a thought: what’s better, to live in a small city or a big village (and does that phrase make sense)? I was born in a metropolis with a bit over 4 million inhabitants. I lived there until I was 17 – hence, a massive influence on my personality. Then I moved to another metropolis, about the same size (maybe very slightly bigger in absolute numbers, but covering a larger area it always felt smaller).

And then, I moved to a hamlet with about 100 inhabitants. Don’t ask why or where, it doesn’t matter. Life just happens. And life just happened when, after about two years in that village, I moved to a town that was larger by about 2000 people – and colder by about 40 degrees F (20C) on average. There, I lived for another two years until I moved to the place I currently live – a city of about 350.000 inhabitants.

How Do You Define “Success” anyway?

The big question: How do you define success? But of course, by measuring it, right?

You might think that the need to quantify everything is innate in humans. After all, when our ancestors lived in caves and had to hunt every day for their survival, 4 wild boars versus 3 could make the difference between life and death.

Fast-forward to the present day (Space Odyssey style) and the obsession with counting is more intense than ever. We live in the digital revolution era (with all its problems). Is your camera 12 or 24 megapixels? How many GB of RAM is your computer, your phone, your tablet? How tall are you? What’s your shoe size? Will it be a small, medium, or large coke?

You could argue – and you wouldn’t be wrong – that there is nothing sinister with measuring in that way. We need to be able to organize our life, after all.

The problems begin when you begin to overexpand measuring in adjacent areas. How many megapixels soon becomes “my camera is better than yours”, and, worse still, “I can take better photos than you”. The size of your clothes becomes a synonym of your value as a person. The size of your breasts a way to define you as a sexual being.

Sooner or later, we reach to the most absurd measurement of them all: the size of your bank account as a sign of your success.

It will take far more than looking at your bank account to define success. Good morning lemmings
